Franzoni's 15th-Place Finish Paces Chargers in Millikin Dechert Classic

Sophomore Emily Franzoni (Canton, Ill./Canton) led the Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team in both rounds as the Chargers took seventh at the Millikin Dechert Classic over the weekend at South Side Country Club.

Franzoni paced the Chargers with a first-round 88 on Saturday and added an 86 on Sunday, putting her 15th overall for the tournament at 174. Sophomore Haley Guilinger (Thomson, Ill./West Carroll) also finished in the top 20, shooting 90 and 87 to tie for 19th.

Freshman Jaeden Workman (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) wasn’t far behind, posting rounds of 90 and 89, good for 21st overall. Madison Newton (Erie, Ill./Erie) carded a 97 on Saturday and was the Chargers’ fourth scorer Sunday with a 96. Sophomore Renee Scheider (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow) posted a first-round 94 and followed with a 100 on Sunday.

Freshman Kaylyn Stearns (Gilson, Ill./Knoxville) shot 117-107 while competing as an individual.

Sandburg totaled a 362 in the first round and dropped its score by four shots to 358 on Sunday for a 720 combined score, leaving the Chargers four shots behind sixth-place North Central.

Illinois Wesleyan shot 625 (316-309) for the weekend to run away with the title. The Titans won by 61 shots over runner-up and host Millikin. IWU’s Melanie Wolf was medalist with round of 79 and 73 (152) to win by 10 strokes over teammate Rylie Loux.
